Then one conversation changed everything.
Hi, I'm Hugo. I'm an outdoor photographer from Finland who grew an audience of 900,000 and built a 6-figure business around the work I love – now I help other photographers do the same.
It started as a hobby in Finland. I picked up my parents' camera, loved it instantly, and knew I had to have my own. Two weeks later I was on a family trip to Rhodes, already trying to make something of it.
Rhodes, 2017 – two weeks after I first picked up a camera.
For years, I struggled to become actually good. People praised my photos – but I knew something was missing, and I couldn't figure out what. Learning from people ahead of me, I improved in years, not decades.
The kind of photos I was able to make once I learned the right methods.
But even then, I didn't know how to build a life around my photography. That was my dream – to spend my time taking photos wherever I want, whenever I want. In 2021, I started my business trying to make it real.
By 2023 I was waiting on a project that felt like my big break. Every morning I'd open my messages first thing – nothing. Check again in the afternoon – nothing. Weeks of that. The silence was almost worse than a no. I had somewhere between €1,000 and €2,000 in my account and no idea if the next payment was coming. The message eventually came back positive – I got the project. But something shifted in me during those weeks of not knowing. I told myself: I will never put myself in this position again. One client. One thing. No system. No backup. Never again.
The hardest part of that period wasn't the money.
It was knowing I didn't have anyone to ask. I was working around the clock – putting in the hours, sending the messages, doing everything I was supposed to do – and none of it felt in my control. I was good at photography. I just didn't know how to build something stable around it.
A few months later I was in Paris, about to attend a networking event.
There I was, sitting with a mentor and talking through possibilities. He said something that stopped me:
"You're a great photographer. But you're trying to sell something people don't actually need right now."
He wasn't crushing my dream. He was pointing at a different door. The problem was never the photography – it was that I had no framework for figuring out what people actually wanted to pay for, how to reach them, or how to turn a conversation into a client.
Once I had that, everything changed. I built an offer people actually wanted. I learned how to find clients instead of waiting for them. I grew from a few thousand followers to 900,000. I went from that moment in Finland – a grand in my account and no plan – to a 6-figure business, living between Finland and Bali, shooting what I love, choosing my own schedule.
Not because I'm more talented than you. I just didn't try to figure it out alone, and got help from people ahead of me.
I built Story Lens so you can stop feeling stuck on what to do to improve… and actually reach your goals.
